Golf in Phuket

Golf tourism in Thailand continues to grow every year and attracts ever increasing numbers of foreign tourists to come and play in the sunshine, whilst enjoying everything else that this amazing country offers. There are around 260 golf courses in Thailand, which helps to draw approximately half a million golfers each year from all over the world especially to destinations such as Hua Hin, Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Phuket, which has some of the best and most enjoyable courses in the country. Thailand has become the most popular destination in Asia for this exciting sport and is amongst the top few in the world, not far behind the market leader Spain in terms of sheer visitor numbers.

Thailand enjoys almost year round good weather and ideal golfing conditions, and the courses in Phuket impress with their varied designs and difficulty ratings, set against beautiful natural landscapes on an island that has many attractions. The facilities are modern and the courses suit all levels from beginners to the experienced enthusiasts and professional players. In Phuket, you can easily combine golf with trips to the beach or visits to nearby islands, and stay in luxurious accommodation at the clubs or resorts around the island.

Phuket has more than enough challenging courses to keep you entertained during your stay on the island, and with prices below what you may pay back home, there is no better place to enjoy a few rounds of golf whilst on holiday.

Blue Canyon Country Club

Located in the north of Phuket, the Blue Canyon Country Club is a Championship Class course and is regarded as one of the finest in Asia. Set in a 720 acre secluded valley, with the Phang-Nga mountains and the Andaman Sea framing the backdrop, the scenery is impressive. The club is based at what was originally a tin mine surrounded by rubber tree plantations, and was converted into a course designed by the Japanese golf architect Yoshikazu Kato.

Blue Canyon first achieved notoriety when it played host to the 1994 Johnnie Walker Classic tournament, and again in 1998 (the first on the 1998 European tour calendar) and subsequently in 2007, as well as the Honda City Invitational Tournament in 1996. Blue Canyon was also the first course to host the prestigious Johnnie Walker three times, and has won many industry awards over the years, such as being rated the best golf course in Asia by a variety of magazines.

The Canyon Course
There are two courses at Blue Canyon. The Canyon Course is an 18 hole, 72 par course that was designed in 1991. Water hazards come into play at 10 of the holes, and there are around 80 bunkers. It has featured in many major titles, and with its large and fast undulating greens and lovely tree-lined fairways that require great accuracy, it’s definitely a favourite course to play on both for beginners and professionals.

Signature holes include number 17, a par 3 hole which has been voted one of the top 500 holes in the world, as well as its most famous 13th (the Tiger hole). Hole 14 remains a firm favourite among many players.

The Lakes Course
The second course at Blue Canyon is the appropriately named Lakes Course which has a markedly different character to the Canyon Course with some of the largest greens in Asia. It’s an 18 hole 72 par course (7129 yards) with water hazards on 17 of the holes, and has 36 bunkers. The Lakes opened in 1999 and features a mix of impressive water-filled canyons (a result of the previous tin mining operations) and natural low lying land.

The course is suitable for a broad range of golfing abilities with red, white, blue and black tees that cover all standards. The first 9 holes lead you through lakes and canyons, whilst the second 9 holes include lakes and rubber tree woodlands. The signature holes include hole 4, which is a par 4 and definitely the hardest on the whole course, and hole 18 which is also one of the most challenging; quite uniquely, it presents the player with two routes separated by just a single tree. One of the most enjoyable and interesting aspects of playing here is the scenery and wildlife that can be observed on and around the course.

Facilities
Blue Canyon has first rate facilities that help to make the experience extremely enjoyable, including a pro shop where all the top name kit can be bought or hired, and a golf school with expert tuition and cutting-edge analysis techniques. There are four practice putting greens (two on each course) and indoor and outdoor driving ranges. Three excellent restaurants, a spa, and luxurious resort accommodation round off the comprehensive facilities. Being only minutes from the airport, transport to and from the club is excellent.

Laguna Phuket Golf Club

The Course
This first class course is in northwest Phuket near Bangtao Beach, situated in the Laguna compound which houses upmarket hotels, resorts and luxurious homes. Previously known as the Banyan Tree Golf Club, this is a revamped and remodelled 18 hole, par 71 course which has proved extremely popular since its inception in 2004. Improvements have been steadily made each year and the course was redesigned by Max Wexler (who designed Palm Hills Hua Hin) and David Abell. The changes seem to have paid off as accolades won here include the Top Ten Best Golf Course in Thailand, the Top Ten Best Resort Course in Asia, and the Top Ten Best Club House in Asia award.

The course challenges abilities and boasts sand and water hazards at 12 of 18 holes, lush and verdant hills, tropical lagoons, undulating fairways, and a backdrop of blue sea and gorgeous mountains. There are red, white and blue tees, with a total distance of 6654 yards from the back tees and 5464 yards from the forward tees. The most difficult on the course includes hole numbers 5 and 8; the latter has water on the left side and three treacherous bunkers on the right, followed by a dog leg that bends over to the right hand side. Laguna also has one of the longest holes of any in Phuket, namely hole 17 at a distance of 612 yards from the blue tee.

Facilities
The facilities at the Laguna are certainly top notch. There is a very modern club house, a pro shop with the latest kit available, a café, and a professional tennis instruction for those that fancy having a go at another sport. The practice facilities are provided by the renowned Andy Combe Golf School, which includes a driving range, a putting green, and practice bunkers where you can hone your skills to the limit. The golf teaching centre features the latest high tech equipment and advanced techniques such as video analysis.

Loch Palm Golf Club

The Course
The Loch Palm Golf Club sits right in the centre of Phuket and is a lovely 18 hole, par 72 course spread over 160 acres of tropical landscape that nicely complements the surrounding terrain. Opened in November 1998, this unique course was designed by Dr. Sukitti Klangvisai whose efforts have made this one of the most atmospheric courses to play, with smooth slopes and dramatic height changes, lakes and abundant trees, rolling hills, and water hazards on nearly every hole. There are 67 bunkers to avoid and around 6555 yards to play (blue tee), or 6135 yards (white tee) and 5326 yards (red tee).

The course encloses the massive Crystal Lake and thousands of palm trees add heaps of jungly atmosphere to the already impressive vistas. The top hole is arguably number 14, an incredible par 3 which is 168 yards from the back tee down to a long green, with water all the way around. The variable wind and height makes matters particularly hard on this course. Hole 18 is considered amongst the toughest, being a par 5 on the way back to the club house, with a very narrow fairway flanked by the lake on the right hand side.

Facilities
Loch Palm can be easily reached from all over Phuket, and is only 15 minutes from Patong Beach. It has a unique and impressive club house which has undergone recent refurbishment, an aqua based driving range (balls splash satisfactorily in the water), a putting green and a decent restaurant in which to relax. Just like all the other courses, there is a pro shop where all the latest and greatest equipment can be bought or hired.

Mission Hills Golf Resort

The Course
Mission Hills is one of the newest courses in Phuket which was designed by the renowned Nicklaus Design company and opened in 2004. The course is located in the northeast corner of Phuket and is an 18 hole, par 72 course with splendid ocean views, tropical forests, dozens of white sand bunkers and nestles between nearby rubber plantations and mangrove forests. The total course distances are 6806 yards (black tees), 6308 yards (blue tees), 6009 yards (white tees) and 5127 yards (red tees), and water features heavily in seven of the holes.

Because it’s right on the coast there are constant pleasant breezes and Sea Isle and Bermuda grasses are used extensively throughout. Interestingly, hole 18 comprises 2 greens and lets you choose an alternative end to your game, before heading off to relax at “hole 19”. Another unusual arrangement is that the greens for holes 2 and 5 are right next to each other. The signature holes are numbers 2 and 4. Hole 2 is a par 5 which shares the island with number 5, and hole 4 has a vast expanse of white sand between the green, and enjoys stunning ocean views.

It’s worth noting that golf carts are compulsory at Mission Hills.

Facilities
The facilities here are superb and include a 5-star hotel with 72 luxurious rooms, a driving range with 5 greens, a spa and fitness centre, and an impressive Thai style club house with Jacuzzis, a swimming pool and a cosy pool bar. There’s also a restaurant, café, a putting green, and as expected a pro shop. Golf lessons are on offer for anybody that wants to improve or analyse their game.

Phuket Country Club

The Course
The Phuket Country Club is one of the oldest and finest courses in Phuket (established in 1989) which has hosted many national tournaments, on the site of a reclaimed tin mine and conveniently located between Patong and Phuket City. There are two demanding courses which meander through a series of lush valleys, hills and limestone cliffs; the original course is appropriately known as the Old Course, and the new one the Country Club Course. The former is an enjoyable 18 hole, par 72 course designed by Dr. Sukkiti Klangvisai that features three distinct environments: 6 holes in hills, 6 on the level and 6 through beautiful landscaped forest.

The Old Course features water on 10 holes and measures 6484 yards (blue tees), 6126 yards (red tees), and 5719 yards (white tees). Testament to its popularity are the numerous awards it’s garnered, including the Best Course in Thailand (2001) by Asian Golf Magazine. Without doubt, the signature hole is number 10 (557 yards), an unusual hole with plenty of water and voted as one of the best par 5 holes in Asia. The hole runs around a small lake, but anybody feeling particularly confident might attempt an ambitious shortcut across the lake; be careful as many balls are inevitably lost on this hole.

The newer Country Club Course features just 9 holes and is ideal for anyone with limited time to play. The yardage is 6750 (blue tees), 6474 (yellow tees), 6020 (white tees) and 5136 (red tees). It’s a very challenging championship course which has beautiful scenery and a well thought-out layout; unsurprisingly, water features heavily here. Whichever course you play on, you’re sure to enjoy the diverse mix of terrain and the attractive surroundings. Why not have a go on both courses?

Facilities
The Country Club has all the usual facilities such as a driving range (with 52 floodlit all-weather bays), chipping and putting greens, and practice bunkers. The range opens every day between 7am and 7pm. Golf lessons can be arranged and there is also a pro shop. Apart from golf, there’s a tennis court and a restaurant.

Phunaka Golf Course

The Course
Phunaka is the newest golf course in Phuket which opened in 2009, and is an excellent and relatively inexpensive place especially for new and practice golfers. It’s also a great option for anybody that doesn’t want to pay the higher prices at all the other clubs. The course can be enjoyed by amateurs and experienced players alike, and has some fairly challenging holes. It’s a 9 hole, par 30 course (with par 3 and par 4 holes only, no par 5’s) created by designer John Morrow. One novel aspect is that it’s floodlit throughout the course so you can play during night or day. The distances covered are 2163 yards (blue tees), 1926 yards (white tees) and 1660 yards (red tees).

Facilities
There’s a 330 yard driving range with 56 bays, along with a chipping and putting green. The club provides extensive training, and there is even a golf programme for children. Additionally there’s a fitness centre, a pro shop, and karaoke and seminar rooms.

The Red Mountain Golf Club

The Course
Red Mountain opened in 2007 and is the newest 18 hole course in Phuket, located just south east of the Loch Palm club. Another John Morrow creation, it’s sited on an old abandoned tin mine and has been rated as amongst the top few in Asia. Dozens of national events have been hosted here, and it features very picturesque scenery with loads of natural hazards such as bunkers, ravines and water.

It’s a standard 18 hole par 72 course with distances of 6781 yards (black tees), 6341 yards (blue tees), 5925 yards (white tees) and 5203 yards (red tees). Golfers rate the club highly but it’s one of the most expensive in Phuket. However, as the adage says, you get what you pay for and this remains one of the most popular and enjoyable courses on the island.

Note that golf carts are compulsory at Red Mountain.

Facilities
There is a very modern and impressive club house with a decent restaurant and pro shop that stocks all the usual brands. The driving range and putting green ensures that you can get sufficient practice to improve your game, which could also be helped by the expert tuition available from a PGA professional.
